SUV driver in viral hit-and-run claims trial to reckless driving


KUALA LUMPUR: The driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV), who went viral on social media for an alleged hit-and-run incident involving a motorcyclist on the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) last Sunday, was brought to face charges before the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday (Dec 18).

Sum Kah Fei, 34, however, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Haneefa Ariffin to the two charges brought against him for reckless driving leading to an accident and not stopping after the crash.

On the first charge, Sum, who is a businessman, was charged with driving the SUV recklessly and leading to a collision with a motorcycle which caused the rider Muhammad Nur'Faiz Saini @ Ausaini, 34, to suffer serious injuries. The accident allegedly happened at 12.35pm on Dec 15.

The first charge, framed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 provides for a maximum prison sentence of five years and a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000 and the disqualification of holding a driving licence for not less than five years, if convicted.

On the second count, Sum was charged with failing to stop his vehicle after the accident on the same day and at the same time and place, under Section 52(1) APJ 1987 which carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment of not more than six months, if convicted.

The court allowed the accused bail of RM6,000 with one surety for both charges and fixed Feb 24 for remention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahjiman prosecuted, while Sum was represented by lawyer Quek Kia Ping.- Bernama
