Trainee teacher dies in crash with trailer on Gua Musang - Kuala Lipis road


GUA MUSANG: A Terengganu teacher training institute student perished when the sports utility vehicle she was in with her friends was struck by a trailer at KM16 of the Gua Musang - Kuala Lipis route on Wednesday (Dec 18).

The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 am as the victim, Nurul Alya Fatnin Mohd Mawardzi, 22, and three of her friends were en route from Kuala Lumpur to the Sultan Mizan Teacher’s Training Institute campus, Sinar Harian reported.

Besides the Proton X50 the victim rode in, the accident involved three other vehicles, a Proton Saga and two Perodua Axias.

The accident is believed to have involved 13 victims, including the trailer driver.

Gua Musang District Police Chief, Supt Sik Choon Foo said preliminary investigations revealed that during the incident, a Volvo trailer driven by a 28-year-old man was travelling from Kuala Lipis, Pahang, towards Gua Musang.

“Upon reaching the location, the trailer driver lost control and collided with two cars, a Perodua Axia and a Proton Saga.

“The trailer then struck the rear of another Perodua Axia and the Proton X50, which were parked on the left side of the road,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said the impact caused the Proton X50 driver to sustain head injuries, while the front passenger sustained minor injuries.

He added that the rear left passenger suffered hip injuries, while the deceased was pronounced dead at the scene.

Supt Sik also mentioned that the Perodua Axia driver sustained serious head injuries and is receiving treatment at Gua Musang Hospital.

Six other victims reportedly suffered minor injuries.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in death.
