MUAR: The latest news regarding two Malaysian citizens, including Mohammed Nazir Lep, 48, who had been detained at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, has brought joy to his family, who have been awaiting his return for 24 years, Malay language daily Sinar Harian reports.

Najib Lep, 60, said the news of his brother's return, which they learned through the media, has given new hope to the family in Kampung Jeram Masjid here.

"If it is true as reported, we are very grateful as the long wait is finally over, and the hope to reunite becomes a reality.

"Our family is waiting for his return, and we hope to meet him as soon as possible, if possible tomorrow," he told Sinar Harian on Wednesday (Dec 18).

A house has also been built for Mohammed Nazir in Kampung Jeram Masjid for him to start a new life upon his return.

On Wednesday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the US had handed over two Malaysian citizens detained at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The other detainee handed over to the Malaysian government is Mohammed Farik Amin.

Both were arrested in Thailand in 2003 and placed in solitary confinement at a secret location operated by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) before being transferred to the detention camp in 2006.
