Citizens foil rape attempt in public toilet

KLUANG: An unemployed man has been detained by members of the public for allegedly trying to rape a woman inside a public toilet at Laman Kreatif Kampung Melayu here.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said police were notified that a 34-year-old man had been detained at around 5.50pm on Tuesday for attempted rape.

“At around 5.20pm on the same date, a 24-year-old woman, who works as a trader, entered the public toilet, where she found the door of one of the cubicles was locked, but did not suspect anything.

“When the victim was about to enter one of the cubicles, the suspect emerged from the locked toilet and ordered her to remain quiet.

“As she attempted to leave, the suspect immediately locked the main door,” the senior police officer said yesterday.

ACP Bahrin added the victim then screamed for help, but the suspect approached her and used his weight to push her, causing the victim to fall to the floor.

“When the assailant tried to molest the victim, she bit his arm and scratched his face, and was able to escape before alerting the public,” he said.

The suspect was arrested at the location, he said, adding that he had committed a string of offences before.

He has been remanded for four days until Dec 21 and could be charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
