JOHOR BARU: The Johor police have received a total of 952 body-worn cameras (BWCs), says Johor police chief Comm Datuk M Kumar.
He said the cameras would be distributed to frontline personnel, including officers in mobile patrol vehicles (MPVs), the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB), traffic police, and district police headquarters.
"These cameras will be used by our frontliners to record all daily operational activities.
"Additionally, they can address complaints or allegations against the police force or officers in the field and enhance public perception," he said.
He said this during a press conference held after the Johor police monthly assembly at its headquarters here on Thursday (Dec 19).
"Most importantly, recordings from the body-worn cameras can serve as evidence in court," he added.
On Wednesday (Dec 18), The Star reported that the police are being equipped with more than 7,000 bodycams, better known as BWCs.
Bukit Aman’s Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director, Comm Datuk Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad, said the nationwide roll-out for all 7,648 BWCs will be completed by March next year.
"It started with police contingents in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on Oct 15, followed by Perlis on Nov 15 and Johor on Dec 10.
"So far, 2,760 BWCs have been distributed as of Dec 10.
"They will be available at 157 district police headquarters and 640 police stations nationwide," Comm Wan Hassan said.
