MELAKA: The 46-year-old owner of a Selangor-based company is the second person to be picked up by graft busters in an ongoing “honorary titles for sale” investigation.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has also widened its scope of investigation to determine whether a syndicate based in Selangor is involved in the Datukship sales racket, following this arrest.
The female suspect was detained by state MACC officers when she turned up for questioning at 4.45pm on Tuesday.
A six-day remand order was obtained against the suspect at the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh yesterday.
The suspect had allegedly solicited and accepted a bribe totalling RM375,000 from a businessman to secure him a “Datuk Seri” title.
On Tuesday, MACC arrested the 54-year-old manager of a private firm, also from Selangor, for deceiving the local businessman.
Both suspects had convinced the businessman that they were able to secure the title awarded by another state before demanding money as kickback.
However, the businessman was not conferred the award despite paying the sum.
The suspects are being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act. State MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrests when contacted.
