Man arrested for insulting royal institution and PM

KUALA LUMPUR: A TikTok user has been detained in connection with insulting the royal institution and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The 22-year-old man allegedly made disparaging remarks against His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, the Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Anwar regarding their dining choices.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the suspect was detained following a report lodged in Cyberjaya.

"The complainant saw a statement uploaded by user @ryanwong_5845 on TikTok.

"The statement was believed to aim at insulting the royal institution and incite hate and provocation towards the royal institution.

"It also has the potential to threaten public safety and harmony," he said when contacted.

A smartphone was also seized, he added.

"We are investigating under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

"The investigation is still ongoing," he said.
