Heavy rain causes flash flood in Bayan Baru

GEORGE TOWN: Heavy rain caused a flash flood near Jalan Mayang Pasir on Friday (Dec 20) evening.

Several viral videos circulated on social media also show part of Jalan Mahsuri and its nearby area submerged in ankle-deep water.

A Civil Defence Force spokesperson said the flash flood happened after heavy rain for about an hour.

He said the area near One World apartment and its surrounding area were also affected.

"The flood water however receded around 7pm," he said.

The downpour also has caused traffic congestion during rush hour.

This is the second time this week that the Bayan Baru area has seen flash floods.

On Dec 13, heavy rain for several few hours caused flooding along Jalan Tun Dr Awang, near the Setia SPICE Convention Centre.

Malaysia is currently experiencing the northeast monsoon.
