Seven plead not guilty to offering non-existent investment on Facebook, WhatsApp

BALIK PULAU: Seven men pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court today to charges of promoting a non-existent investment scheme via Facebook and WhatsApp earlier this month.

Wong Yu Teng, 26; Lim Yong Aun, 30; Chin Chun Ze, 29; Ong Wye Chun, 38; Choo Wee Jen, 28; Jeremy Thiah Lae Jin, 33; and Cheong Wymun, 33; entered their pleas before Magistrate Chia Huey Ting.

They were charged with engaging in a criminal conspiracy by deceiving victims into investing in the fictitious Multiply Finance investment scheme through Facebook and WhatsApp.

The offence allegedly occurred at Block C-41-08, The Clovers, Lengkok Merbah 3, Taman Sri Bayan, Bayan Lepas at 10.15pm on Dec 2, 2024, and the charges were framed under Section 120B(2) of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they face a maximum sentence of six months in prison or a fine, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor R. Lushini requested the court to set bail at RM8,000 for each accused.

However, lawyer Pang Chuin Keat, representing all the accused, appealed for the bail to be reduced to RM5,000 for each, citing their lack of regular income and criminal records.

The court granted bail of RM5,000 in one local surety for each accused and scheduled March 25, 2025, for the submission of documents. - Bernama
