PETALING JAYA: The low pressure system in the waters off Sarawak has the potential to develop into a tropical depression within 24 to 48 hours and is expected to move northwards towards the central South China Sea, warns the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
Its director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the low-pressure system had formed on Friday (Dec 20) afternoon.
"Weather models indicate that the intensity of this system has the potential to develop into a tropical depression within 24 to 48 hours.
"This system is expected to move northward toward the central South China Sea.
"At the same time, a monsoon surge is ongoing and is expected to persist until Dec 24.
"This situation may result in heavy continuous rainfall in Sarawak, Labuan, Sabah, and the South China Sea waters," he said in a statement issued at 1.30pm on Saturday (Dec 21).
He said in connection with this, it had updated its continuous rain warning until Dec 22 involving Sarawak, Labuan and Labuan.
"Additionally, the Strong Wind and Rough Sea Warning is in effect until Dec 24, 2024," he said.
