KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia has once again solidified its position as a global leader in sustainable timber production with its re-election as chair of the Coalition on Sustainable Timber for a second term.
The decision, announced during the Coalition's sixth meeting on Dec 17, highlights international recognition of Malaysia's proactive advocacy for sustainable forestry and fair trade practices.
Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin said the coalition, which comprises forestry and timber industry associations from nine major timber-producing nations, was established in December 2023 as a unified response to the European Union's Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR).
"Its mission is clear to ensure that the voices of timber-producing nations are heard and to advocate for equitable implementation of the EUDR," he said in a statement on Saturday (Dec 21).
Chan lauded the Malaysian Timber Association (MTA) and the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) for spearheading the initiative, stressing that Malaysia's re-election as chair underscores the country's unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and its ability to lead in tackling global challenges.
"Malaysia's leadership within the Coalition on Sustainable Timber reflects our dedication to promoting sustainable forestry while safeguarding the interests of timber-producing nations," Chan said.
However, he added that the coalition faces a critical period as the implementation of the EUDR has been delayed until December 2025.
Chan urged the timber industry to remain steadfast in advocating for fair regulations while continuing to champion sustainability.
As Malaysia takes on its second term as chair, Chan reaffirmed the country's commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
"Together, let us strengthen Malaysia's position as a global advocate for sustainable timber production, ensuring our contributions are recognised and valued on the international stage," he said.
