Official probe into harassment claims against UM professor underway, says ministry


KUALA LUMPUR: Misconduct and any breach of procedure towards those in Higher Education Institutions is taken with utmost seriousness and action will be taken against those who go against the law, said the Higher Education Ministry.

In a statement on Saturday (Dec 21), the ministry said allegations of sexual harassment involving a professor at Universiti Malaya were being addressed.

"The university does not take such reports lightly and we were informed that this issue has been officially addressed.

"The university's integrity unit is actively conducting an investigation.

"All relevant procedures and regulations are being fully complied with and the university has specific guidelines and regulations regarding the issue of sexual harassment.

"Appropriate measures are being taken to protect the rights of all parties," it said.

The ministry said that the individual involved has made a police report and authorities are conducting an investigation.

The ministry added that there would be no compromise of any party is found guilty of breaking the law and strict disciplinary action will be taken.

On Wednesday (Dec 17) Universiti Malaya confirmed that it was investigating a case involving an academic who allegedly sent inappropriate photographs to several students.
