RM50mil allocated for power subsidy

KOTA KINABALU: Some 700,000 power users will enjoy RM50.9mil in Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) subsidy for the first six months of next year.

This funding by the state government means that electricity consumers will still receive the subsidy they have been getting all these years.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this exemption applies to domestic consumers with electricity consumption of 1,500kW or lower (or a monthly bill of around RM677) and non-domestic consumers in the low-voltage tariff category (CM1 and ID1).

“The latter includes micro, small and medium enterprises,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“To give the surcharge exemption, the state government will allocate an ICPT subsidy of RM50.9mil.

“The state government has also requested a fuel subsidy totalling RM278mil from the Federal Government for this purpose.

“This is necessary due to the increase in energy generation cost resulting from the rise in fuel prices influenced by global impacts,” Hajiji said.

He said the subsidy to Sabah Electricity and public licence holders will benefit 693,834 consumers, which make up 99% of the total electricity consumers in Sabah.
