NEW DELHI: Malaysia is now truly recognised as a top destination for Indian tourists travelling abroad, says Malaysian High Commissioner to India Datuk Muzafar Shah Mustafa.
He said that Tourism Malaysia recognises Indian tourism industry players for their role in promoting Malaysia, as a new record has been set with over a million Indian tourists visiting the country.
"More than a million Indian tourists chose Malaysia as their preferred destination this year. This reflects the trust, spirit, and cooperation between Tourism Malaysia and the Indian tourism industry," Muzafar said at an event organised by Tourism Malaysia on Thursday (Dec 19) evening to honour tour operators and airlines.
Malaysia has seen a significant increase in tourist arrivals from India this year following the introduction of free visa entry in December 2023.
Last year, Malaysia received a total of 671,846 visitors from India, with the number exceeding one million between January and November this year.
Malaysia aims for even greater numbers from India as it launches tourism promotion activities next year in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Travel demand between India and Malaysia continues to rise, supported by strong air services, according to Tourism Malaysia Director in New Delhi, Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali.
"Our target for 2025 is at least 1.1 million arrivals from India," he said.
Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, IndiGo, AirAsia, and Air India operate 248 weekly flights between India and Malaysia, offering about 47,000 seats.
On Friday, the government announced an extension of the visa exemption for Indian nationals until Dec 31, 2026.
Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman said this is in line with Malaysia's 2025 Asean chairmanship and preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
He added that the government had extended a similar visa exemption to Chinese nationals until the same date.
Awang Alik said the government's visa liberalisation plan, which has been in place since Dec 1, 2023, aims to boost the country's economic and tourism sectors while maintaining national security.
"As part of this plan, a 30-day visa exemption is granted to nationals of the People's Republic of China and India.
"This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance Malaysia's appeal as a travel destination while ensuring the safety and security of the nation," he said.
