Orchid exports to hit RM4bil

PUTRAJAYA: A target has been set to increase the country’s orchid export value to up to RM4bil in the next four years, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

The Agriculture and Food Security Minister said the target will see a significant hike in export value from the RM9.3mil recorded in 2022.

Mohamad believes the target is achievable through the export of orchids to the Middle East, including to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is a new market that can generate high revenue.

“This is one of the new incomes that can be pursued by those involved in the orchid industry,” he said after the flag-off ceremony of a new orchid creation called ‘Miracle Mokara’.

Mohamad said the ministry pays special attention to high-value commodities such as orchids to increase the country’s agricultural exports.

“The export value of the country’s floriculture industry, which currently hits RM300mil annually, is expected to increase with the opening of new markets in Middle East countries, strengthening the sector’s contribution to the agricultural export value,” he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry said it has developed an orchid export farm known as the Dubai Orchid Export Farm since 2021.

With the collaboration of industry partners, the Mokara orchid is ready for the premium market such as luxury hotel chains in Dubai.
