Strong winds damage structures in Semporna


KOTA KINABALU: A mosque was among dozens of structures damaged by strong winds in two villages in Semporna early on Sunday (Dec 22).

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department secretariat reported a short circuit caused by broken electric cables during the incident.

A total of 103 houses were damaged, comprising 68 in Kg Selamat, 11 in Kg Seri Aman and 24 in Kg Sejati Semporna. Also damaged were a mosque, and five vehicles in Kg Selamat and 15 cars Kg Seri Aman.

Fire department officials received a call about the disaster at around 6.21am and dispatched teams to assess the situation.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Sabah Electricity officials were also on-site to monitor the electricity cables and ensure there were no other hazards.

According to the Meteorological Department, strong winds and heavy rain are expected from now until December 24 in areas such as Sarawak, Labuan, Sabah, and the South China Sea.
