Anwar wishes Prabowo a speedy recovery after meeting postponed

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia extends best wishes for the health of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and looks forward to meeting him in Pulau Langkawi, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a Facebook post, Anwar mentioned that the meeting with Prabowo has been postponed due to Prabowo's fever.

"My family and I are already in Pulau Langkawi to receive a visit from our friend, President Prabowo Subianto today (Dec 23).

"However, he had asked to postpone the meeting last night for a few days due to fever.

"Praying for Prabowo to recover as soon as possible while also continuing the plan for a meeting between the two countries," Anwar stated.

He added that he would also meet former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on the island on Dec 26.

Prabowo and Thaksin are scheduled to be in Langkawi to discuss regional strategic issues and Asean developments.

The bilateral meeting with Prabowo was set for Monday, while the meeting with Thaksin is scheduled for Dec 26.

Anwar said the upcoming meeting with Prabowo will focus on strengthening bilateral ties and discussing Indonesia's role as a strategic Asean member.

Regarding the meeting with Thaksin, Anwar noted that it will address regional development issues and explore diplomatic approaches to common challenges.

Anwar recently announced the appointment of Thaksin as his unofficial advisor for chairing Asean in 2025.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thaksin's daughter, who visited Malaysia on Dec 16 in Putrajaya.

Malaysia will officially assume the Asean chairmanship on Jan 1, 2025. The theme for Malaysia's Asean leadership in 2025 is "Inclusion and Sustainability".

Malaysia has previously held the Asean chair in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
