KOTA KINABALU: An early morning thunderstorm with strong winds damaged more than a hundred homes and many vehicles in the east coast Semporna district.
A mosque and surau were not spared either in the 6am incident which hit Kampung Selamat, Kampung Seri Aman, Kampung Sejati and Kampung Batu.
State Fire and Rescue Department officials said a distress call was received about broken wire cables and damaged houses, with teams despatched to check on the situation.
A total of 68 houses, a mosque and five vehicles were damaged in Kampung Selamat, while 11 houses and 15 vehicles were affected in Kampung Seri Aman.
In Kampung Sejati, 24 houses were damaged while 15 vehicles were hit by fallen debris and branches, the department said in a statement.
In Kampung Batu, nine houses were wrecked and a surau was damaged, bringing the total number of damaged houses to 112.
No casualties were reported.
An electric cable which broke due to the strong winds was repaired after Sabah Electricity workers rushed to the scene.
“Our teams will be on standby to attend to emergencies during this bad weather spell,” the Fire Department said.
According to the Meteorological Department, strong winds and downpours are expected to occur until Tuesday in Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan and over the South China Sea.
