KOTA KINABALU: A woman was killed, and her husband and two children were injured when their car ended up in a ditch following a collision on Jalan Lintas here.
In the 9pm incident at the Iramanis area, the 58-year-old woman, seated in the front, was thrown about 50m from the car driven by her 61-year-old husband.
The driver sustained injuries, while their sons, aged 23 and 15, were also ejected from the vehicle but suffered only injuries.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda stated that the family was headed home to Petagas from Inanam when the incident occurred.
He explained that the husband attempted to change lanes but was startled by another vehicle, causing him to step on the brakes and return to the original lane.
"However, he lost control of the car, which collided with another vehicle driven by a man in his 40s," he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 23).
The family's car then crashed into a ditch on the left side of the road.
As a result, the three passengers were ejected from the car, leading to the woman's death.
"She died of serious head injuries, confirmed by a medical officer at the scene," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Lintas Fire and Rescue station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said the two people in the other vehicle involved in the collision were unharmed.
