Stay safe during festive season, says Sabah Fire and Rescue Dept

KOTA KINABALU: Festive decorations and traditions can pose dangers if not handled responsibly, says Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Director Jainal @ Zainal Madasin.

He said that the festive season is a time of joy and togetherness but also brings heightened risks of fires, accidents, and water-related hazards.

To ensure a safe and harmonious celebration, he urged the public to prioritise safety.

Jainal highlighted the risks associated with decorative lights, old electrical devices, and unsupervised candles, which may seem harmless but can quickly become fire hazards.

He advised the public to inspect electrical equipment for faults, avoid overloading power sockets, and always turn off appliances before sleeping or leaving home.

Jainal added that it is important to place candles in safe locations, away from flammable materials, to prevent accidents.

“Let us prioritise safety during the festive season to protect lives, families, and property,” he said on Monday (Dec 23).

With the Northeast Monsoon underway, Jainal emphasised the importance of staying vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas.

He urged residents to monitor weather updates and heed warnings from authorities.

jHe then said that crossing flood waters or engaging in water activities in fast-moving rivers should be avoided, and children should be kept away from dangerous areas to minimise risks.

“Water hazards can become fatal in an instant. Prioritise the safety of your family and learn from past incidents to prevent avoidable tragedies,” he urged.

Jainal then said that the department is fully prepared for emergencies, with over 1,300 personnel and extensive resources deployed across 799 hotspots.

However, he emphasised that the public’s collective awareness and preventive actions play a crucial role in ensuring safety.

“Safety is not just the responsibility of emergency responders; it begins with each of us. Let’s work together to make this festive season one of joy, not sorrow.”

As celebrations unfold, Jainal added that the spirit of care and responsibility can make all the difference.

He said that he hopes that this festive period will be marked by happy memories, free from tragedy.

“Prioritise safety and ensure the well-being of your loved ones. Together, we can create a season filled with love, peace, and harmony,” he said.
