JOHOR BARU: Stay safe and be vigilant – this is the advice of the Johor Fire and Rescue Department to Malaysians who are planning to go for trips during the school holidays and upcoming Christmas celebration.
Its director Siti Rohani Nadir noted that the country is still in the midst of the northeast monsoon season.
“We understand that Malaysians, whether they are celebrating Christmas or not, will take this school holiday as an opportunity for a short getaway with their families.
“Many of them will go to the beach or river to enjoy some family time,” she said here yesterday.
Siti Rohani said those who have made plans to go to coastal areas or rivers should be extra vigilant due to the ongoing monsoon season. She said during this period, heavy rain would occur and it is important for the public to be updated about the weather forecast.
“The public should keep a close tab on reports from the Meteorological Department on any sudden weather changes.
“Furthermore, if they want to go to the beach, please keep a close eye on whether there is a red flag raised in the area.
“If there is a red flag, then it is advisable for them not to carry out any activities, especially swimming at the beach, as it would be dangerous,” she added.
Siti Rohani said those who plan to go camping or picnic along riverbanks should also take the same approach. She said this is because days of heavy rain could lead to a water surge at rivers and waterfalls.
“Among the early signs that they should look out for is the high presence of leaves or even tree branches.
“If they notice that the water currents at rivers and waterfalls are getting stronger, they should pack and leave the area immediately as a water surge could happen,” she said.
Siti Rohani also advised those leaving home during the holiday period to ensure that all electrical items, including Christmas decorative lights, are turned off and unplugged.
She said most fire incidents are caused by short circuits due to heavy usage of electricity.
“Please make sure that all electrical appliances, including ovens and decorative lights, are unplugged to avoid short circuits, which could lead to a fire,” she said.
For those who would be travelling on the road, Siti Rohani urged them to adhere to the road rules for their safety.
She said that before leaving for a long journey, people should make sure their vehicles have been inspected to avoid mechanical issues while on the road.
“If drivers are feeling tired due to the long drive, they should go to the nearest R&R for a rest before continuing with their journey,” she added.
