Bung Moktar urges safety during year-end Sabah gatherings

KOTA KINABALU: With two peaceful assemblies to take place simultaneously at the end of this year, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin called on the protesters to act responsibly.

He also called for safety and stability to take precedence in the organisation of any gatherings, urging caution amid plans for the overlapping assemblies in front of the Sabah State Administrative Centre, where the Chief Minister’s office sits, on Dec 31.

Bung Moktar stressed the potential risks of such simultaneous events, warning that they could lead to tensions or extreme provocations between groups, disrupting public order.

“While I acknowledge that both gatherings aim to deliver important messages, it is crucial to evaluate their implications on Sabah’s safety and stability,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 24).

Bung Moktar urged police to take proactive steps to prevent any unwanted incidents, including thorough assessment and engagement with organisers to ensure compliance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Among his recommendations are to relocate one assembly to another area to avoid physical confrontation conduct dialogues with the organisers to promote lawful and responsible behaviour and enhance the presence of security personnel to manage the situation and ensure smooth proceedings.

Bung Moktar said while Sabah Umno supports initiatives that benefit the state, these must be conducted responsibly and with the public interest in mind.

“The safety of the people of Sabah cannot be compromised. All parties must maintain harmony and avoid actions that could jeopardise the state’s stability,” he said.

He urged organisers and participants to act responsibly and work together to uphold public safety and peace.
