Man rescued from durian tree after climbing to retrieve drone

KOTA KINABALU: Firemen had to be called in to rescue a man who had climbed up a seven-metre-tall durian tree but was unable to come down later in Sabah’s southwestern Beaufort district.

It was learned the 36-year-old man had gone up to retrieve his drone that got stuck on the branches but experienced dizziness soon after reaching the top in Kampung Batandok Lubak on Monday (Dec 23).

Beaufort Fire and Rescue station chief Mohammad Hasbullah Nenggok said they were alerted to the incident at 5.54pm.

He said a team reached the location about 12km away at 6.07pm.

“The man was sitting on the tree as our firemen went up to rescue him using a ladder and rope,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Dec 24).

After being brought to the ground safely, he said, the man was then given initial treatment by Health Ministry personnel and was reported to be in stable condition.

“After ensuring there were no other risks, we ended the operation at 6.49pm,” Hasbullah said.
