Panther in Gua Musang finally caught by rangers

KOTA BARU: A panther that has been spooking villagers in Kampung Gua, Paloh 1 in Gua Musang was finally caught, much to their relief.

State Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the wild animal was finally trapped on Monday.

“Six members of the Kuala Krai district Perhilitan office and Gua Musang wildlife conservation centre staff carried out an operation to transfer the panther to a more suitable and safe habitat.

“The capture of the panther has eased the villagers’ anxiety about their safety. The panther is believed to have come out of the Relai permanent forest reserve located near the village in search of food,” he said yesterday, Bernama reported.

Mohamad Hafid said mitigation measures such as clearing areas around the village and farms of bushes was implemented. Villagers were also advised to be in groups when visiting their farms and land, install lights around their houses and to stay away from the area at night, he added.

“The public is advised to be more cautious and vigilant if they come across wildlife and alert authorities if there are sightings,” Mohamad Hafid said.
