Calm atmosphere at Kuala T'ganu mosque ahead of public caning


KUALA TERENGGANU: The situation remains calm at Masjid Al Muktafi Billah Shah on Jalan Sultan Mahmud here as preparations are being made for the public caning of a khalwat (close proximity) offender on Friday (Dec 27).

No police presence was evident until around 11.30am when two members of the district police headquarters traffic division cordoned off a 6sq m area for the sentence to be carried out.

The caning is scheduled after Friday prayers in the 'Aasim Hall of the 43-year-old mosque.

Mohd Affendi Awang, 42, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 31(a) of the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment Amendment 2022.

He is set to receive six strokes of the cane and faces a fine of RM4,000 in default six months' jail. – Majoriti
