Kelantan braces for floods in 9 districts


KOTA BARU: Potential flooding has been forecast in nine districts in Kelantan over three days starting Sunday, says the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID).

The districts expected to be affected are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Pasir Puteh, Bachok, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Jeli.

“For Tumpat, the areas at risk include the Sungai Golok basin, Sungai Kelantan basin and Sungai Pengkalan Nangka basin.

“In Pasir Mas, the Sungai Golok and Sungai Kelantan basins are likely to be affected.

“In Kota Baru, three river basins are at risk. “They are Sungai Kelantan, Sungai Pengkalan Datu and Sungai Semerak,” the department said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

In Pasir Puteh, the Sungai Kelantan and Sungai Semerak basins are expected to be impacted, it added.

For Bachok, the forecast covers the Sungai Kemasin and Sungai Semerak basins, while in Tanah Merah, it involves the Sungai Golok and Sungai Kelantan basins.

“In Kuala Krai, the Sungai Kelantan basin is at risk, whereas in Jeli, it involves the Sungai Golok as well as Sungai Kelantan basins.

“The department will conduct continuous monitoring and provide updates on flood warnings if significant rainfall persists in these areas,” it added.

The department also cautioned that the forecasted floods could occur earlier or later than anticipated.

As such, all disaster management agencies and local residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, are advised to remain vigilant and heed instructions from the authorities.
