GEORGE TOWN: The mastermind behind the incident where a lawyer was injured with a metal rod has been charged in court.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad, who did not name the accused, said the 46-year-old man was arrested and charged in court on Friday (Dec 27).
"He was arrested and charged this morning.
"He is the alleged ‘mastermind’ behind the attack.
"He claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here this morning for the same offence that three others were charged with on Tuesday (Dec 24).
"Bail was set at RM8,000," he said in a statement on Friday (Dec 27).
He said a total of 22 people were arrested in the course of the investigation.
On Tuesday, Koay Beng Ghee, Teh Eng Tat, both 36, and Ng Weng Kooi, 41, pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon in an incident that took place in broad daylight in October this year.
They were jointly charged with injuring Beh Hong Shien, 37, on Oct 22 at 9.50am on Persiaran Karpal Singh, along with another attacker still at large.
They were charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read with Section 109 of the same law, and the offence is punishable with imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping, or any of the two.
It was previously reported that the victim, a lawyer, was attacked by unknown assailants wielding metal rods, leaving him with serious injuries to the head and shin.
