Telegram, WeChat seek licence to operate

PETALING JAYA: Social media platforms Telegram and WeChat have initiated the process of obtaining the licence to operate their platforms in Malaysia, says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“MCMC commends both Telegram and Tencent for their commitment to comply with the licensing requirements.

“Both platforms are expected to meet the necessary requirements to operate in Malaysia soon,” the regulator stated.

MCMC said that the licensing requirement, effective from Jan 1 next year, aims to enhance online safety, user protection and regulatory oversight for Internet messaging and social media service providers. This framework is designed to foster a trusted and safe online environment by urging service providers to protect users, particularly children and vulnerable groups.

Malaysians are expected to benefit from improved safety, better user experiences and increased protection against harmful content.

MCMC also reminded all service providers meeting the conditions for licensing to submit their applications before the Dec 31 deadline.

All social media and Internet messaging services with at least eight million registered users in Malaysia must apply for a Class Licence.

“Failure to do so may result in regulatory actions to be initiated, which all parties are keen to avoid,” MCMC warned.
