Water levels recede in Pahang

KUANTAN: The flood situation in Pahang has improved with evacuees housed at temporary relief centres (PPS) in Raub and Lipis allowed to return home.

The Raub District Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said four evacuees from a single family, who had been sheltered at the PPS in Balairaya Kampung Tersang since 11.30am on Wednesday, were allowed to return home at 8am yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation and Drainage Department’s Public Infobanjir portal indicated that four rivers in the state were at the alert level, namely Sungai Pahang in Kuala Krau, Temerloh; Sungai Kuantan at Kuantan Bypass, Kuantan; Sungai Dong in Kampung Peruas, Raub, as well as Sungai Jelai at the Lipis Jetty, Lipis.

In Lipis, the floods had receded and two PPS – housing 89 victims from 28 families – were closed at noon yesterday, Bernama reported.

The Lipis District Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, in a statement, said the evacuees at SK Lubuk Kulit and Kampung Beletik Mosque PPS were allowed to return home at 12.20pm.

“Although the weather is currently fine, we still advise residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to stay cautious, vigilant and follow authorities’ instructions as the country is still experiencing the northeast monsoon season,” it said.

The flooding was caused by the overflow of a river in Raub, which then flowed into a river in Lipis, inundating several homes and forcing residents to relocate to the PPS.
