Body of third drowning victim found in Papar waters

KOTA KINABALU: Rescuers have located the body of the third drowning victim three days after he went missing at a beach in Sabah's southwestern Papar district on Saturday (Dec 28).

The remains of Karl Marx Vitalis, 48, was discovered in the waters off Kampung Bundusan at 12.02pm.

He was reportedly washed away while attempting to rescue his nephews, with whom he had been swimming earlier on Thursday (Dec 26).

Papar Fire and Rescue station chief Johainin Ruslan stated that Karl’s body was found approximately 1.5km from where he was last seen.

"The remains were then handed over to the police for the next course of action," he said in a statement.

On Thursday (Dec 26), the man's two nephews, Rizq Aariz Julkarnain Abd Aziz, 14, and Rubern Vitalis, 7, drowned, while a third nephew, aged 12, was rescued by villagers shortly after the incident around 5pm.

It is understood that the uncle had brought his three nephews from a neighbouring village for a swim at Kampung Bundusan beach.

However, they encountered difficulties in the water after strong waves and currents hit shortly after 5pm.
