Carnival shut down over flag complaints

TANGKAK: The Bukit Gambir LED Lights Carnival here has been ordered to close immediately following complaints about a replica of a space shuttle featuring China’s flag.

The Tangkak District Council said the decision was made after the organisers failed to comply with rules for organising carnivals, particularly in terms of respecting the sensitivities of the local community.

“On Wednesday, the Tangkak District Council received a complaint regarding the carnival organisers’ construction of the said structure.

“As a result, the structure at the Bukit Gambir multipurpose hall was dismantled, and a notice for immediate cessation was issued to the organisers on Thursday.

“This is in accordance with Sections 14(1)(b) and 49(2) of the Trade, Business and Industrial Licensing By-Laws (Tangkak District Council) 2017 due to the breach of conditions,” it said in a statement yesterday, Sinar Harian reported.

The council said further monitoring on Thursday found no activities had taken place, and that the carnival had been fully closed.

“The Tangkak District Council always encourages business activities within the local council’s area, provided they adhere to the relevant conditions.

“However, strict action will be taken against any vendors who fail to comply with these conditions, especially those that cause public concern,” it said.
