DID issues flood warning for three districts in Pahang

KUANTAN: Floods are expected to hit three districts in Pahang, namely Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin from Sunday (Dec 29) to Monday (Dec 30).

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) issued the warning following the alert-level continuous rain forecast by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), reported Sinar Harian.

Its National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (PRABN) said in a statement today that significant rainfall is expected to cause overflow in several major river basins, including the Pahang River, Kuantan River, and Rompin River.

"The Pahang River Basin covers the Lepar River, Belat River Channel, Chendering Canal, Jawa Canal, Rangin Canal, Galing River, Jelai River, Kenau River, Lepar River, Penor River, Pinang River, Soi River, and Terus River,” it added.

Meanwhile, in the Pekan district, water levels are expected to rise at the Air Tawar River, Anak Tasek River, Cheroh River, Dong River, Kenong River, Kerdau River, Lipis River, Mentiga River, and Semantan River, all of which are within the Pahang River Basin.

In Rompin, increases are expected at the Pontian River, Sekin River, Gayung River, Aur River, Jeram River, Kepasing River, Jekatih River, and Pukin River, which are part of the Rompin River Basin.

Besides the Rompin River, floods are also expected due to overflow from the Endau River Basin, Pontian River Basin (Cemara River), and Keratong River Basin.

The DID said that close monitoring will continue, and the latest information will be provided if significant rainfall persists in these river basins.

"Floods may occur earlier or later than the predicted dates, depending on the intensity of the rainfall in the respective river basins," it added.

On Saturday, MetMalaysia issued a continuous rain warning at the alert level for four states starting today.

MetMalaysia stated that this weather condition is expected to affect eastern and western Sabah from Saturday until Dec 30, while Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang will be affected from Sunday until Dec 31.
