Jewellery shop robbed in broad daylight

MELAKA: A brazen robbery unfolded at a goldsmith’s shop in a shopping mall here, leaving shoppers stunned.

The robbery took place in the crowded mall in Bandar Hilir at around 3.30pm on Friday, when the road leading to the mall was closed early to prepare for the state-level New Year countdown.

A viral CCTV recording, lasting one minute and 21 seconds, shows two robbers wearing caps, black jackets and face masks entering the shop.

The robbers are believed to have brandished sharp weapons to threaten the two female employees on duty and demanded that they hand over the jewellery on display at the counter.

In a screenshot from the footage, one of the suspects is seen reaching over the counter to grab the jewellery before leaping over to seize more items.

The terrified employees could only step aside to avoid being harmed before both robbers fled the premises.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit, when contacted yesterday, confirmed the robbery and said an investigation is ongoing.
