Lenggong grocer in the soup for selling cooking oil above set price

IPOH: A grocery in Lenggong is being investigated for selling packet cooking oil above the ceiling price.

Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said it sold a 1kg packet of oil at RM2.70, or 20 sen above the price set by the government.

Kamalludin said an operation was conducted on Saturday (Dec 28) after consumers complained.

"Our enforcement officers found that the premises was indeed selling cooking oil above the set price.

"The team found 60 packets of cooking oil in the storeroom, with 13 more found in a box at the front of the premises bearing a price tag of RM2.50," he said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 29).

"Action has been taken under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 for giving misleading prices," he added.

Kamalludin said the business operator could be fined up to RM250,000 for the first offence if found guilty.

He reminded businessmen to conduct their operations in an ethical manner and comply with the law or face stern action.
