MELAKA: The Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, has agreed with Low Chee Leong's proposal to designate Kota Laksamana as the new state capital.
The suggestion, which the Kota Laksamana assemblyman proposed in September, was tabled during the final day of the Melaka Legislative Assembly proceedings on Tuesday (Dec 31)
"I never expected the Chief Minister to favour shifting the capital from the historic city (Bandar Melaka) to Kota Laksamana," he said in an interview.
However, Low stated that the new capital should only be named once all necessary infrastructure has been established and is fully operational to facilitate the transition.
"This is a significant move that requires meticulous planning to ensure it benefits the state and the people," he said.
Low said Kota Laksamana is a newly developed area with the potential for modern infrastructure and growth.
He said Ab Rauf acknowledged the proposal's merit, stating that the move aligns with Melaka's long-term vision for growth and progress.
"I will move forward with the idea of developing collaborative planning between state authorities and relevant stakeholders to realise the proposal effectively," he said.
Low said the initiative could elevate Melaka’s status as a progressive state, attract investments and create new opportunities for the people.
Kota Laksamana sits on a vast tract of reclaimed land that has been turned into a state's commercial hub, replacing Taman Melaka Raya.
The area is also located close to Bandar Melaka.
