KUALA BERANG: A woman was forced to wade through water for 300m while carrying her grandchild to escape her flood-hit home.

Semek Mohamad, 60, from Kampung Nibong, said water entered her house and reached chest level by 7am yesterday, following continuous heavy rain since the previous morning.

With no other option, she and five other family members decided to brave the floodwaters as the water level was rising rapidly.

Semek said she did not have time to move any electrical appliances such as the washing machine and coconut grater in the kitchen as she was more concerned about the safety of her family members.

Semek added that it was the second time her home had been affected by flooding this year, causing thousands of ringgit in losses due to damaged electrical appliances, furniture and plants.

“At first, my children and I wanted to wait for help from the security personnel.

“But the water rose so quickly that we had no choice but to leave and seek assistance.

“We decided to walk through the floodwaters. I carried my one-year-old grandson while my two daughters carried my two other grandchildren aged seven and four,” Semek said when met at SK Kampung Nibong.
