KUALA LUMPUR: Forty designated lanes utilizing QR codes for immigration checks will be launched on a trial basis at KLIA Terminal 1 and 2 this month, according to Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The Home Minister stated that these QR code lanes, exclusively for Malaysians, will be available at the departure and arrival halls of both terminals.
"The issue of congestion at the nation's entry points, including KLIA, during peak periods and holidays has garnered attention from various parties.
"Currently, immigration checks at KLIA rely on manual counters and the autogate system, which have limited capabilities.
"While autogate was introduced to expedite immigration checks, its efficiency remains a concern, causing many to opt for manual counters," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 1).
Saifuddin Nasution explained that the ministry decided to trial the use of QR codes for immigration checks this month.
"The time to clear immigration checks is between five to seven seconds compared to the conventional autogate method, which takes 15 to 25 seconds.
"We believe using the QR code will ease congestion at the country's main entry points, especially during peak periods.
"It will also enhance security and service efficiency through the use of the latest technology," he said.
With the QR code system, travellers will no longer be required to take out their passports during immigration checks.
"However, it is compulsory for them to bring their passports throughout their travels.
"While the QR code system is being introduced, we will still have manual counters and the autogate system," he added.
