Cops seize 52 cartons of alcohol with unpaid duties during operation in Johor

JOHOR BARU: Police have seized a total of 52 cartons of various alcohol brands with unpaid duties during an operation at Taman Desa Cemerlang here.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said a team of Marine Police Region II raided a premise in the area that has been turned into a storage to keep the alcohol.

“The team conducted the raid on Wednesday (Jan 1) night at around 8.35pm. We found 52 cartons of various alcohol brands that we believed were unpaid duties at the location.

“We also arrested a local man, who is in his 50’s, at the location for possessing the illicit items valued at more than RM44,000,” he said in a statement here on Thursday (Jan 2).

Supt Mohd Sohaimi added further checks on the suspect and found he has three prior criminal records against him.

He said police also found some alcohol inside the trunk of a car, which is valued at RM80,000, at the scene where the vehicle has also been seized.

“This brings the seized items total value to be at more than RM124,000,” he said adding that the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

Supt Mohd Sohaimi also warned smugglers that the police would intensify their operations to curb smuggling activities that have caused the country losses.

He urged those with information on smuggling activities to continue channelling vital information to the police that can protect national security and public order.
