PETALING JAYA: The decomposed body found in a river in Banting on Saturday has been identified as that of missing teenager Yap Xin Yuan (pic).
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the identification of the 15-year-old schoolgirl was confirmed after a DNA test.
Three suspects, including the victim’s 16-year-old boyfriend, are being remanded until Sunday to facilitate a murder probe, he said.Xin Yuan’s body was believed to have been dumped into the RTB Sungai Changgang.
“The motive of the murder is still under investigation. We have informed the victim’s family of the positive DNA result,” Comm Hussein said yesterday.
He pledged to solve Xin Yuan’s murder and bring those responsible to justice.
Xin Yuan was reported missing on Dec 19 after a lion dance practice at a basketball court in Batu 11 Cheras.
She was believed to have visited her boyfriend’s house at about 8.45am that day.
A CCTV recording obtained by her parents from a neighbour of the boyfriend’s house showed Xin Yuan arriving in what is believed to an e-hailing car.
The mother, 42, suspected something amiss when the boyfriend told her that Xin Yuan came only at 4pm that day.
The woman had gone over on Dec 20 to inquire about Xin Yuan’s disappearance.
The woman said the boyfriend claimed that he and Xin Yuan had a meal together and got into an argument about an hour later, when she booked an e-hailing ride to leave.
The mother then went knocking on the doors of several neighbours and one of them provided her with the CCTV recording.
According to reports, the mother said her husband sent Xin Yuan for the practice session that morning.
“When we prepared to pick her up later, she did not answer our calls.
“We contacted the lion dance centre and someone there said the centre was not open that day,” she was quoted as saying.
Sources said a team was piecing together what had happened, aided by the CCTV footage.
A post-mortem was conducted at Hospital Banting after the body was found.
Police appealed to those with information to contact the Kajang police headquarters at 03-8911 4222 or the nearest police station.
