Man dies from electrocution while catching crabs in Sabah

Electric wires were discovered at the scene of the incident.

KOTA KINABALU: A 43-year-old man died after being electrocuted while catching crabs on Lorong Kuala Neutron, Kampung Likas, near here on Thursday (Jan 2) night.

In the 10.45pm incident, the victim was reportedly struck by an electric shock while carrying out his activity.

Lintas Fire Station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said a team of 10, led by operations commander Mohammad Faizal Alias, was deployed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 10.45pm.

When the team arrived at the scene, some two kilometres away from the station, at 10.52pm, they found the victim lying on the ground.

“Initial investigation revealed that the victim had gone crab catching at the mangrove area alone. He was electrocuted after coming in contact with illegal electrical wiring there.

“The team had to wait for the Sabah Electricity to cut the power supply before moving the victim to a safer place. He was, however, pronounced dead at the scene by attending medical officers,” she said.

She added that the body has been handed to the police for further action.

“After ensuring the area was safe and with no other hazards, the operation was concluded at 12.50am,” she said.
