RM200K in drugs seized, suspected trafficker nabbed in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Police have disrupted a drug syndicate's operations after seizing about RM200,000 worth of narcotics and arresting a suspect in Bukit Mertajam on Friday (Jan 3).

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the 39-year-old suspect was arrested during an operation conducted by the state police headquarters' Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

"The suspect was apprehended in front of a house in Bukit Mertajam as he was parking his motorcycle at 4.15am," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 3).

Comm Hamzah said inspection of the suspect's motorcycle found a plastic bag containing five packs of drugs believed to be syabu weighing about 6.1g worth about RM195,200 and two more packs of drugs believed to be heroin, weighing about 900g and worth about RM8,800.

He said further investigation found that the suspect has been actively trafficking drugs since September.

It is believed the drugs seized were meant for distribution within the state.

Comm Hamzah said the suspect also tested positive for amphetamines, methamphetamine and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

"He also has drug and criminal offences on his record," he added.

The suspect has been remanded until Thursday (Jan 9) to help with investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
