Zahid: Lim’s era has passed

PETALING JAYA: Lim Guan Eng’s era has passed and he should put his trust in the current DAP leadership instead, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said Lim’s remarks about the rally in support of convicted ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is his personal view and not representative of DAP’s current leadership.

On Tuesday, Lim, who is Bagan MP, spoke against Umno for organising a rally with PAS in support of Najib.

He said the collaboration would raise eyebrows about the sincerity of Umno’s partnership in the unity government.

“In my view, his era has passed, and it would be better for him to place his trust in DAP’s current leadership without stirring conflict with any allies,” Ahmad Zahid said at a New Year gathering at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry yesterday, Sin Chew Daily reported.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Rural and Regional Development Minister, said he did not find it necessary to comment further as he considered Lim’s comments to be his personal opinion.

He also affirmed that the rally would continue as planned.

The solidarity gathering is planned on Jan 6 at 9am outside the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.

The rally will be held in conjunction with the Court of Appeal’s hearing related to an alleged royal addendum order that will apparently allow the jailed former prime minister to serve the rest of his prison term under house arrest.

Both Umno and PAS members are set to turn up for the rally.

Umno supreme council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi had said council members would attend the rally and Umno division members would be present as a sign of solidarity.

“I was informed that almost all divisions will send buses, except for Sabah.

“All Umno members want is a confirmation on whether the royal addendum exists or not, and it has to be implemented (if it exists),” he said.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan had also urged party leaders to mobilise members for the rally in an internal memo.
