Five hurt after armed man attacks eatery

KOTA KINABALU: Five people were injured when a man wielding a parang and a hammer ran amok at a restaurant in Sabah’s east coast Sandakan district.

Sandakan police chief Assist Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said the 29-year-old local man was arrested by police after they were alerted to the incident at about 9.10am yesterday.

He said the two men and three women, aged between 34 and 63, were being treated at the Duchess of Kent Hospital, adding that their conditions were stable.

Based on initial investigations, he said the man had entered the restaurant and suddenly started to attack the customers.

ACP Fuad said police personnel managed to overpower the man and seize the two weapons.

“The man was unhurt and taken to the police station,” he added.
