Istana Negara: Pardons are the King’s prerogative


PETALING JAYA: Applications for a pardon or reduced sentences must be submitted by the prisoner concerned for the consideration of the Pardons Board, which is chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, at its next meeting, says Istana Negara.

The King has the prerogative power to grant pardons, reprieves and respites for offences committed in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

In a statement yesterday, Istana Negara said that His Majesty may also remit, suspend or commute any sentences that have been handed down by the court for the particular offence.

This prerogative is based on the provisions of Article 42(1) and (2) of the Federal Constitution.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power is exercised with the advice from the Pardons Board, which he chairs,” the Palace said.

Istana Negara also reminded the public to respect the Federal Constitution and the country’s laws.
