PETALING JAYA: The government must follow the decree of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, regarding former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak, says Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (pic).
The Bersatu deputy president's statement comes two days before a solidarity gathering planned for 9am on Monday (Jan 6) outside the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.
This event coincides with the Court of Appeal’s hearing concerning an alleged royal addendum order that could allow Najib to serve the rest of his prison term under house arrest.
In a statement issued on Saturday (Jan 4), Hamzah said the public has the right to know if there was an additional decree regarding the pardons issued by Sultan Ibrahim.
"It is the duty of all Malaysians to uphold and honour the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the royal institution as symbols of the nation's sovereignty, as outlined in the Federal Constitution," he said.
Hamzah added that the government or any relevant parties must implement the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in an orderly manner.
He said this must be done according to the nation's legal framework, including any additional decrees regarding royal pardons issued by His Majesty.
"The public has the right to know the truth about the existence of an addendum decree that has become a matter of public interest,” said Hamzah.
"Questions have arisen about why it has not been implemented despite being issued by His Majesty over a year ago,” he added.
Hamzah said the issue is crucial because any action of defiance, concealment or denial of any decree issued by the Institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, including the addendum decree, constitutes a serious betrayal of the King and the nation.
"The voice of the people, who seek to know the existence and status of the addendum decree, is a right guaranteed under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, and it cannot be obstructed by any party," said Hamzah.
