Sabahans must be united to realise rights under MA63, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: It would be difficult to realise Sabah's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) if Sabahans are not united, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pic).

The Parti Warisan president said Sabah is the state with the most number of parties in the country – which is an indication of division instead of unity.

"We can't realise the rights under MA63 unless we are united," he said during his speech at the Christmas and New Year celebrations party in Kepayan near here on Saturday (Jan 4).

Shafie also questioned the sincerity of those who claim they are fighting for Sabah's interests but appeared to be intent on dividing the people.

He also said that Sabah does not need the divisive rhetoric from peninsula-based parties, and it was not wise to expect these parties to do better for Sabah.

"We let Sabahans do better for ourselves," he said.

On the recent anti-graft rally organised by varsity students, Shafie said peaceful demonstrations are not illegal and the people should be able to voice their concerns.

"These are the voices of the young generation and we can't just stop them from voicing out," he said, adding that it is up to the government to find solutions to issues brought up if the feedback has substance.
