IPOH: Police have arrested three men for allegedly stealing telecommunications cables in Gerik.
Gerik OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mahmood stated that the three men, who were behaving suspiciously, were apprehended on Jalan Kuala Rui at about 4.30pm on Friday (Jan 5).
A patrol team from the Bersia police station, assisted by personnel from the Gerik police station, arrested the suspects and confiscated a white van parked by the road.
"Upon inspection, the three suspects were wearing reflective vests. Checks inside the van found equipment used to cut cables. Nearby, there were three rolls of cables that had been cut," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 5).
Supt Zulkifli mentioned that the suspects, aged between 31 and 36, were detained to assist in investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
Telekom Malaysia verified that losses amounted to about RM3,000 for the 70m long cable that was cut.
"The suspects' modus operandi involved using clothing and equipment typically used by Telekom Malaysia contractors. We will question the suspects to determine if they are involved in other cases.
"We also urge the public to provide any information regarding cable theft," he said.
