Efforts underway to restore cement supply in Lahad Datu, says state minister

KOTA KINABALU: Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe has assured that efforts are underway to address the disruption in cement supply affecting Sabah's east coast areas.

"It is being handled," he stated in a brief text message when queried about the issue, which arose from the closure of the main access road to the cement plant in Lahad Datu.

However, he did not provide details on the specific measures being taken.

The disruption was initially highlighted by Cement Industries (Sabah) Sdn Bhd (CIS) General Manager Sumardi Mohd Yusuf on Saturday (Jan 4), who noted the supply had been affected since Jan 2.

"The disruption is caused by the closure of the main access road to the Lahad Datu plant by individuals claiming ownership of the road," said Sumardi.

He mentioned that CIS had lodged a police report and that appropriate actions are being taken to resolve the issue.

"CIS regrets this incident and is in constant communication with the District Office and police to ensure a swift resolution," he stated.
