PETALING JAYA: Following the statement by Istana Negara and the advice of the Inspector-General of Police to the solidarity rally for Datuk Seri Najib Razak, MCA says it will not mobilise its members for the planned event in Putrajaya tomorrow.
However, it will not stop its members from attending it in their personal capacity, MCA said in a statement released by its publicity bureau yesterday.
The party, which is part of Barisan Nasional, whose lynchpin Umno was spearheading the rally for its former president and prime minister, reiterated its respect for the Federal Constitution, including the prerogative powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under Article 42(1) and (2) to grant pardons, reprieves and respites of sentences for any offences committed within the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
MCA noted that Umno secretary-general, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, as the organiser, had issued a statement announcing that Umno would not proceed with the gathering.
“This decision was made following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, as conveyed through the official statement by the Royal Malaysia Police, on Jan 3 at 7.30pm.
“MCA is closely monitoring these developments,” the statement added.
It remains consistent on the issue of the royal addendum for house detention for Najib, said MCA, and called on the government to be transparent about whether such an addendum existed during the tenure of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The government must uphold and honour all directives from His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at all times following the Federal Constitution,” it said.
