KUALA LUMPUR: A discussion among men on pregnancy inspired filmmaker Ernest Chong to produce his first movie focusing on women who get pregnant by accident at an older age.
“How would women feel if they found out they are pregnant when they are in their 50s?” he said while relating the motive for the film OMG! Mom’s Big News.
He said it began with a casual chat with radio deejay Chan Fong on birth rates, pregnancy and other related topics.
“These issues struck us and I thought, we can turn this into a movie,” said the actor, who decided to helm the film himself.
Chong said it took him and his team a year to write the script before shooting started in July last year.
He believes many viewers will be able to relate to the film’s themes.
OMG! Mom’s Big News tells the story of Rita Wong, a woman who becomes pregnant just as she and her husband, played by Chan, are planning their retirement.
Wong is played by Hong Kong actress Anita Yuen.
At its exclusive screening here yesterday, 300 pregnant women were invited to view the film.
This set a title in the Malaysia Book of Records for The Most Expectant Mothers in a Movie Screening.
At the event, Yuen also gave a virtual interview to the media.
She said if she was in Wong’s position, she would be happy to welcome the new family member.
“It is a gift from God. I believe that advanced medical technology would ensure that I could give birth to a healthy baby (at such an age),” she said.
The film, scheduled to be released in conjunction with Chinese New Year – which falls on Jan 29 – also stars a slew of Malaysian talents such as Tong Bing Yu, Juztin Lan and Miko Wong.
